Process of making Japanese paper

1.楮(こうぞ)収穫

1. Harvesting

１１月下旬、畑で育てた楮(こうぞ)の木を切る。(参:翌年同じ根から、また枝が伸びる)

In late November, I cut the tree of KOZO that I raised in the field.

( branches will extend again from the same root evry year)

2.楮(こうぞ)蒸かし

2. Steamed KOZO

皮を取りやすくするために蒸す。

Steam to make skin easier to peel.

３.楮(こうぞ)はぎ

3. Peel off KOZO

熱いうちに、使用する皮の部分をはぎ取る。

While hot, peel off the part of the skin to use.

４.表皮干し

4. Skin drying

はぎ取った表皮を(黒皮(くろかわ)と呼ぶ)乾燥させ保管。

Storage the peeled skin (called black skin ) after drying.

５.楮(こうぞ)引き

５.Kozo-biki

表皮とキズを削り取り白皮(しろかわ)にして保管。

Storage the KOZO in the white skin (shirokawa) after shaving off skin and scratches .

６.煮熟

6. Boiling snd heating

楮(こうぞ)を煮る。

Simmer KOZO.

７.ちり取り

7. Removing dast

水洗いし、小さなゴミやキズを取る。

Washing with water and remove small dust and scratches.

８.叩解(こうかい)

8. Beating

餅つきのように叩いて繊維をほぐす。。

Hit the fiber with rod to loosen them like pounding mochi.

９.ビーター

9. Beater

水と叩いた楮(こうぞ)をビーターに入れ、どろどろの綿状の材料にする。

Put water and tapped potatoes in a beater to make mushy cottony material.

１０.ねり作り

11. paper making

トロロアオイの根を潰(つぶ)し、それを水にいれる。

(水に入れると、根が出す粘液で一時的にドロっとした水になる）

Crush the Root of Abelmoschus manihot and put it in water.

(Water becomes thick temporarily by the mucus from the root)

１１.紙漉き

漉き舟(すきぶね)に水・材料・そして、「トロロアオイ」の根から出てくる粘液「ねり」を入れ、簀桁(すげた)で漉(す)く。

Making paper with SUGETA ,after put water ,materials, and slurry in SUKIBUNE.

１２.圧搾(あっさく)

12. Compression

漉(す)きをかさねたものをプレスし、水をしぼる。

Press the No.11 stacked to squeeze water.

１３.乾燥

13. Drying

蒸気ボイラー乾燥機か板干し(天日干し)で乾燥。

Dry in steam boiler dryer or board dried (sun drying).

１４.選別

14. Sorting

紙の重さ・出来具合をチェック。

Check the weight snd the result of the paper.

１５.加工

15. Processing

製品にする。

Make it a product.
